Which Pram Fits a Small Car? Compact Prams Compared

Quick answer

A Fiat 500, a Mini, a Corsa, or a hatchback already full of shopping: plenty of Manchester parents come to us worried their pram won't fit in the boot. The good news is that today's compact prams fold remarkably small, and many are suitable from birth. Here's how they compare.

First, measure your boot

Before you fall for a pram, grab a tape measure. Note the width at the narrowest point (usually between the wheel arches), the depth from the back seats to the boot lip, and the height to the parcel shelf. Then compare those with the folded sizes below. Leave a little room for shopping too!

Compact prams compared

Pram Folded size Weight
Inglesina Quid³ 46.5 x 59 x 19 cm 6.4 kg
Red Kite Push Me Explor 55 x 40 x 22 cm 6.5 kg
Mountain Buggy nano 51 x 30 x 54 cm under 6 kg
Mountain Buggy nano urban 30 x 53 x 52 cm (travel wheels) 6 kg (travel wheels), 7.3 kg (urban wheels)
JoviKids Ayla 55.5 x 44.5 x 38.5 cm 6.9 kg

Our compact pram picks

Inglesina Quid³: the slimmest fold

The Quid³ folds down to 46.5 x 59 x 19 cm and weighs just 6.4 kg. Inglesina says it fits in the overhead luggage compartment of a plane as well as the boot of a city car. The seat reclines up to 170° and takes children up to 22 kg.

Red Kite Push Me Explor: tiny fold, great value

The Explor folds with one hand to 55 x 40 x 22 cm and weighs 6.5 kg. It's suitable from birth to 22 kg, with a seat that reclines fully flat. Red Kite says its fold meets IATA standards for cabin luggage, and a raincover is included.

Mountain Buggy nano: light and simple

The award-winning nano weighs under 6 kg and folds to 51 x 30 x 54 cm. It's designed for newborns to around four years, with a lie-flat sling seat. A travel system belt is included, so you can attach an infant car seat without buying adaptors. It's also a favourite as a second buggy to leave in the car or at the grandparents'.

Mountain Buggy nano urban: city and travel in one

The nano urban comes with two sets of wheels: bigger urban wheels for pavements and kerbs, and small travel wheels for trips away. With the travel wheels it weighs 6 kg and folds to 30 x 53 x 52 cm. It's designed from newborn to around five years, and it has a one-hand fold and a transport strap.

JoviKids Ayla: the easiest fold

Press one button and the Ayla folds itself into a self-standing package (55.5 x 44.5 x 38.5 cm, 6.9 kg). It's suitable from birth to 22 kg, with a lie-flat recline. The box is generous: car seat adapters for the JoviKids Aria infant carrier, a footmuff, raincover, cup holder and travel backpack.

Doona X: skip the boot altogether

If your boot is truly tiny, consider the Doona X. It's an i-Size infant car seat with wheels that fold out, so the stroller travels in the car seat itself, with nothing to pack in the boot. It's for babies 40–85 cm and up to 13 kg, so plan on a pushchair later. See our Doona guide for more.

Baby Jogger City Tour 2 Double: compact for two

Expecting twins, or a toddler and a newborn? The City Tour 2 Double is 66.5 cm wide and fits through a standard doorway. It weighs 10.5 kg and folds in one step to 63 x 66.5 x 25 cm. Each seat takes a child from birth up to 15 kg.

Our verdict

For the smallest boots, the Inglesina Quid³ and Red Kite Explor are hard to beat. If you want one pram for the city and for holidays, the Mountain Buggy nano urban is the clever choice. If you'd rather never wrestle with a fold, the JoviKids Ayla does it for you.

Frequently asked questions

Can a newborn use a compact stroller?

Some can. Look for a seat that reclines fully flat and that the manufacturer says is suitable from birth, like the Red Kite Explor and JoviKids Ayla. The Mountain Buggy nano and nano urban are designed from newborn too.

Which compact pram folds the slimmest?

Of the prams we stock, the Inglesina Quid³ is the slimmest at 19 cm deep when folded, and it weighs just 6.4 kg.

Can I take a compact stroller on a plane?

Several are designed with flying in mind. Inglesina says the Quid³ fits in a plane's overhead compartment, and Red Kite says the Explor meets IATA standards for cabin luggage. Rules differ between airlines, so always check with yours before you fly.
